The idea of creating a TLD for Vienna, the Austrian capital, had already been discussed with ICANN for the first time in 2005, but seven years later, no concrete plans had been made on the extension. It was in 2012 when ICANN was requested to create the .wien.
The .wien receives much support from the organizations and the local government, thus becoming one of the few extensions of geographical area that count on the backing of the community.
Purpose and use
The main purpose of the registry .wien GmbH is to serve the Viennese community in the field of internet. A domain extension such as .wien provides an identity and guarantees that some information, products or services are more easily found within the community form. With the release of this extension, the registry hopes to stimulate innovation for the city in order to attract tourists and highlight the city of Vienna as a center for science, as well as a place to live and work.
Although the Registry will not actively control who uses a domain with a .wien extension, the idea is that the website refers to the city of Vienna. It is not necessary that the birthplace of the owner be born in Vienna but if the domain has nothing to do with the idea of the registry, the same registry may decide to close the website.
