Out of all educational extensions, .university is the one most aimed at higher education. Think of well-known universities such as MIT and Harvard, but also lesser known universities in countries worldwide.
American universities already have their "own" extension, .edu. With the release of .university, universities outside America can now register their domain name with a relevant extension as well.
The .university domain is one of the domains managed by the Donuts registry. Donuts has requested more than 300 extensions during the first application round for new gTLDs in 2012. With extensions such as .theater, .gallery, .band, .construction - all of which can be registered without restrictions - the Donuts portfolio serves all possible target audiences. With such a wide choice of extensions, the internet will target focus groups at the extension level, rather than merely at the domain level.
